Vote!

Dear PSU Student:

The 1998 Higher Education Act requires all postsecondary institutions to make a good-faith effort to distribute voter registration forms to each degree-or certificate-seeking student who is enrolled in a higher education institution.  Pittsburg State has selected to provide this information to our students through your GUS access for continual availability.

If you are not already registered to vote, we encourage you to do so.  If you are a Kansas resident the following information will help you find the registration materials you need.  You may gain access to the Kansas Secretary of State website through GUS under Ballots, Survey and Voter Registration or directly at: http://www.sos.ks.gov/elections/elections_registration.html.  A printable voter registration form and appropriate mailing addresses are provided at this website for all Kansas residents.  Your “home” county may be based on your permanent address or based on your local address while attending PSU.

If you have a valid Kansas drivers license, the link above will also provide an online method to register to vote.

If you are an out-of-state student who prefers to vote through an absentee ballot through your home state, you will need to contact your state election office.  Kansas and Missouri registration forms are also available in the Student Government office in the PSU Student Center.

In Kansas voter registrations must be submitted by the 21st day prior to an election day and confirmation will be returned via mail from the county office.  We encourage you to consider your right to vote and register today!

Turn Off Wireless

We're seeing well over 100 "rogue" wireless "service offering" devices (lots of wireless printers, for example) flooding the airwaves with "Here I am.  Connect to me." transmissions.  These broadcasts interrupt and compete directly with the legitimate "GusNet" wireless network... degrading GusNet performance - sometimes severely - for everyone in the surrounding area.

We ask that you check your area for wireless-capable devices, like printers, Internet "hotspot" features on phones or tablets, gaming devices, or other similar "service providing" devices that offer the ability to connect to the device directly via WiFi.  Turn off these features if you know how.  If you need assistance, contact your tech or the Gorilla Geeks Help Desk (geeks@pittstate.edu or Extension 4600).

Thank you for helping to keep the WiFi airwaves clear so GusNet can do it's job for our faculty, staff, and students.

Reporting Incidents of Sexual Misconduct or Relationship Violence

FROM CAMPUS LIFE AND AUXILIARY SERVICES:

Rape, acquaintance rape, domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault and stalking are serious crimes whether the act of violence is by a stranger or someone known to the victim.

The university strongly encourages and supports victims to report the crime immediately to:

University Police - 620 235-4624 or at their office, Lower Level of Shirk Hall, 1501 South Joplin Street, or

City of Pittsburg Police - 620 231-0400 or at their office, 201 North Pine Street

As an alternative, the victim may report the crime to the University’s:

Director of Student Rights and Responsibilities - 235-4945 or at their office, 104 Bryant Student Health Center, 1801 South Broadway Street, or

Director of Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action (Title IX Coordinator) -
620 235-4185 or at their office, 218 Russ Hall

University personnel will assist in the report process if requested by the victim. As a victim, the individual has the option to decline to notify law enforcement or campus authorities.  University procedures are designed to protect the student who has been hurt by these behaviors and to stop the offensive behavior. The due process rights of alleged offenders are protected, as well as the rights of the victim.

Avoid a $50 Late Fee

Fall 2014 tuition is due by the end of the day on Monday, August 25th.  A $50.00 late fee will be assessed on August 26th.

You have the following payment options:

*  Pay on-line via GUS (you may also grant parents GUS eProxy access to view your tuition statement on-line and pay through CASHNet – see your Student Accounts menu on GUS).

*  Pay at the Cashier’s Office, 112 Horace Mann.

*  If you are receiving financial assistance, follow up and make certain everything is in place for payment or deferment by August 25th

*  Remember we offer a payment plan.  The process is now available on-line through GUS/Student Accounts.  Direct questions to Cashiers at 620-235-4092.

As always, if you have questions….ASK.  Every office on campus would appreciate the opportunity to address your concerns as they arise.  I’ve added a short listing of phone numbers below to consider contacting should you have questions.

Cashiers Office        620-235-4092
Financial Assistance        620-235-4240 or 1-800-854-7488
Commerce Bank        620-235-4574
Gorilla Bookstore        620-235-4875
Registrar’s main number        620-235-4200

You may also utilize the PSU website at http://www.pittstate.edu for additional contact information.

Read Your E-mail

As you no doubt have recognized, students do NOT check their email accounts as frequently as we would like.  To date we have not identified another method to disseminate all of our very important and sometimes lengthy messages to our students.

I would appreciate your help in announcing to your students the importance of checking their email account often and explain this is how many of us communicate information they need to know.

If they wish to forward their gus.pittstate.edu email account to another email account, they are welcome to do so.  The Gorilla Geek support staff is ready to assist them with this process, but I understand it only takes a few seconds and a couple of clicks.

We will continue to do all we can to reach out to our students on the importance of checking their email, and would greatly appreciate your help.  Have a great semester.

PSU: Prepare for the Fall Semester

Classes begin Monday, August 18th. We hope you are prepared and that you will let us know if you have any questions.

Some steps you should consider taking now to prepare:

1)  Check your fall schedule for any possible classroom changes since your enrollment.

2)  Sign up for eProxy, if needed. Make it easy for parents or other individuals to view your tuition by providing them eProxy access through your student account.  By taking this extra step, you are not sharing your own password to your GUS account and limiting what can be viewed by others.

3)  If you are receiving financial assistance and/or scholarships, be sure you have logged into GUS and "verified enrollment". Verification began on August 4, 2014 via GUS.

4)  Consider ordering your textbooks now on-line.  The Pitt State University Bookstore provides a link at http://www.pittstate.BKstore.com to make this task simpler.  Early ordering will provide a better chance for used books and less waiting in line once you're on campus. If receiving financial assistance, you need to know about the book voucher policy. See http://www.pittstate.edu/office/financial_aid/. Renting books are also an option.

5)  Obtain your parking permit on GUS.  University Police will mail it to you or have it ready for you to pick up in their office in the basement of Shirk Hall.

6)  Know who to call when you have questions.  The short list below provides the most frequently called offices at the beginning of the semester.

Cashiers 620.235.4092   (tuition payment questions)
Financial Assistance  620.235.4240 or 1-800-854-7488
Housing/Residence Life  620.235.4245  (for those living on campus) or 1-800-854-7488
Registrars Office  620.235.4200  (to make changes in your schedule, verify enrollment for insurance)

Don't forget many of these offices will be available to assist you in Horace Mann on Saturday, August 16 from 10:00-4:00.
Please ask if you have any questions.
